How Much Is HBO Max on Roku?

Let’s face it: most of us want to be able to watch premium, award-winning TV without being locked into a long-term contract. That’s why so many millions of us have already switched from cable to streaming. It feels so freeing to trade bulky cable bundles for flexible, on-demand services that let us watch what we want, when we want. And when it comes to building the perfect streaming setup, two names keep rising to the top of the conversation: HBO Max and Roku.

HBO Max—which has gone through a few rebranding changes from HBO to HBO Max to Max and now back to HBO Max—remains one of the crown jewels of the streaming world. It’s home to literally decades of prestigious programming, blockbuster films, and some of the most talked-about shows on any platform. Likewise, Roku is the device that makes accessing all of the streaming platforms refreshingly simple. Even for those who aren’t particularly tech-savvy.

So, whether you’re a long-time HBO fan who’s finally ready to cut the cable cord, or you’re a brand-new viewer, we’re here to walk you through what these platforms are, how they work so well together, and what you can expect to pay.

Let’s get into it.

What Is HBO Max

HBO (originally “Home Box Office”) has been synonymous with prestige television for decades. It began as a premium cable channel, and through the decades, it’s evolved into one of the most respected names in entertainment.

When it launched its streaming services, it started as HBO Go but quickly moved onto HBO Max and then to just Max before returning to the familiar HBO branding. No matter the name, the company has remained committed to quality.

What, exactly, makes it different from other streaming platforms? In short: it’s all about the content, especially high-quality original content. And many of its most-watched series have become cultural phenomena, captivating audiences and earning devoted fans.

A few titles have created categories all their own: The Sopranos, portraying New Jersey mob boss Tony Soprano as he navigated his personal and professional life, remains one of the most celebrated shows in TV history. Sex and the City premiered in 1998 and ultimately became one of the most well-known shows in the network’s history—spawning films, a sequel series, and even a prequel (though not on HBO). The Wire, set in Baltimore, following both law enforcement and criminals, is widely considered one of the best—albeit heavy and dark—TV shows of all time. An American masterpiece.

More recently, HBO has continued producing must-watch TV. Game of Thrones became a global phenomenon. Succession kept audiences glued to their screens as four seasons of family dysfunction and corporate warfare were exposed. The Last of Us, based on the dystopian video game, has become one of the most popular and acclaimed shows on TV. (Who else can’t wait for the next season?)

There are too many greats to list here, and the future continues to look bright with the long-awaited return of Euphoria to the final season of Emmy-winning Hacks. Also on the horizon are new seasons of House of Dragan and the new Game of Thrones spinoff, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, making this another massive year for HBO Max subscribers. (If you didn’t have enough to watch already.)

What Is Roku?

If HBO Max is the what you watch, Roku is the how. Roku is a streaming platform that gives you access to all of your favorite streaming services—Netflix, Hulu, Disney+, HBO Max, and dozens more. That’s before you get to the free options like Tubi, Pluto TV, Plex, YouTube, etc. All in one place through one simple interface. It’s like the universal remote control of the streaming world.

Roku works by connecting your TV and your home’s Wi-Fi, which gives you a clean, easy-to-navigate home screen where all of your viewing apps sit side-by-side. There’s no need to switch inputs or juggle multiple remotes. Just find what you want to watch, click, and you’re set. Well, maybe wait for the corn to pop.

One of the biggest reasons Roku has become so popular is because of all of the ways you can use it. You may not even need to buy a separate device—many smart TVs come with Roku built in. If, however, your TV isn’t that smart, you still have a number of affordable options—from a small plug-in streaming stick (that plugs right into your HDMI port) to more powerful set-top boxes if you want a more robust experience.

Prices from Roku devices typically start well under $50, so they’re one of the most accessible entry points if you’re just joining the streaming world. Better yet, you only pay for the streaming subscriptions you choose to add—Roku itself doesn’t charge a monthly fee. That’s especially appealing for cord-cutters who want control over exactly what they’re paying for each month. (Another reason to cut the cord, in my opinion.)

Watching HBO Max on Roku

HBO Max is, of course, fully available on Roku. You will, however, still need a subscription to HBO Max.

Whether you’re using a streaming stick, Roku box, or a Roku-powered smart TV, you can download the app and start watching in minutes. No compatibility headaches. No necessary workarounds.

It just works.

Getting started is as straightforward as it gets. Go to the Roku home screen, navigate to the available channels, and search for HBO Max. Once you find it, hit download. After the app is installed, it will have a place right on your home screen with all your other streaming services.

From there, sign in to your account—or create a new one—and it’s time to dive in! (After you decide what to watch first, that is.)

Watching HBO Max on Roku is seamless. The app is well-designed and easy to navigate. Content is organized by categories like Popular TV, Popular Movies, Today’s Picks, and Critically Acclaimed. And as you watch more, you’ll find a Recommended for You section as well as a place to continue watching that remembers where you stopped.

You can also browse and search, all without ever leaving the Roku ecosystem. And with a Roku TV or a voice-enabled remote, you can even search for content by speaking into it, rather than trying to type with the remote, which is never fun.

Let’s Talk Costs

The Roku device is a one-time purchase. Again, depending on the model, you can enter the ecosystem for less than $50. (Roku-enabled TVs will run more, of course, but can be found around $100.) Best of all, there’s no monthly fee.

As for HBO Max, you’ll find a few different subscription tiers to fit different budgets and preferences. The ad-supported play is the most affordable at $10.99/month or $109.99/year at the time of this writing. But there’s also an ad-free plan for uninterrupted viewing for $18.49/month or $184.99/year. There’s even an Ultimate tier that includes 4K streaming and the ability to download content for offline viewing (which is a real plus if you travel a lot) for $22.99/month or $229.99/year.

Check with your mobile carrier or internet provider to see if HBO is offered as part of a bundle. Deals like these can make subscription services even more cost-effective.

At the end of the day, pairing a Roku device with an HBO Max subscription is one of the most affordable and flexible ways to access premium streaming content. No cable bill in sight.

Takeaways

Streaming premium content doesn’t have to be complicated. The combination of HBO and Roku proves that. With HBO, you’ll find decades of world-class TV and film at your fingertips. From the timeless classics that put HBO on the map (though, admittedly, some age better than others) to the trending new releases that have everyone talking. Roku quietly works in the background to make it all easily accessible. All you need to do is pick up the remote, make your choice, and press play.

Your next favorite show is waiting…
